Greenwashing is a marketing tactic used by companies to make their products or services appear environmentally friendly, even if they are not. It involves making false or exaggerated claims about a product’s environmental benefits or practices in order to mislead consumers into thinking that the company is more environmentally responsible than it actually is.
For example, a company may advertise its products as “eco-friendly” or “sustainable” without providing any evidence to back up those claims. They may also use vague or misleading language to imply that their products are environmentally friendly, without actually making any substantive changes to their production methods or sourcing practices.
Greenwashing can be harmful because it undermines the efforts of truly sustainable companies and makes it harder for consumers to make informed choices.
It also contributes to the larger problem of climate change by perpetuating the idea that environmental concerns can be solved through token gestures rather than systemic change.
